THE LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE PROGRAM FOR THE FEDERAL FAMILY
INTRODUCTION*
The Long Term Care Insurance Program is a new benefit offered by the federal government for primarily Federal employees and their families. Open season began July 1, 2002 and will last until December 31, 2002.
GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
To help the Federal employees with their and their families'
coverage needs.
To stimulate other employer offerings.
To promote the belief that insurance coverage will ultimately help out Medicare
budgets.
ELIGIBLE PERSONS
Federal and postal employees
Active and retired members of the armed services
Federal Annuitants
Current spouses and adult children (age 18 and over, including adopted and step children) of living employees and annuitants
Parents, parents-in-law, and stepparents of living employees and members of the uniformed services.
OPM’S CHOSEN PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS
John Hancock and MetLife have formed a joint venture company called Long Term Care Partners, which manages all core functions of the program.
PROGRAM COVERAGE AREAS
Nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice care, home care, adult day care, informal care, alternate plan of care, caregiver training, and respite care.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Waiver of premium, portable coverage, provider discounts, bed reservation provision, 30-day free look, guaranteed renewable (as long as premiums are paid), international benefits and access to care coordinators for non-insured qualified relatives.
